“I won’t be here anyway.” “My kids can just deal with it.” These are some of the comments we hear regarding why clients don’t initiate or update estate planning documents. There are two main reasons avoiding estate planning is a bad idea. One is that avoiding estate tax planning will inevitably cost your beneficiaries unnecessary time and money when you die. The other is that you may not have adequate protections for your care, medically or financially, if you become incapacitated. Ensuring your loved ones are equipped with legal powers and protections should something happen to you is essential. Making sure they know your intent and how you want situations handled can alleviate much of the burden during these already difficult and complicated times. Be sure to speak with your attorney to discuss your estate planning needs.
