There are several factors to consider when leaving assets to a charity in your will or trust. First, be sure to check the status of the organization with the state and the IRS. Also, if you are leaving monetary assets, be sure to be specific in your documents as to your intent for the funds. For nonmonetary assets, be sure the charity wants the donation and has the funds and ability to maintain the donation. Discuss leaving assets to a charity with your attorney.
